Health and Tree Strength

A major reason for pruning is maintaining plant and tree health.  Removing branches that are infested with insects or disease further reduces the spread of that infestation.  Removing the weak, V-shaped crotches or pruning to prevent their development minimizes tree injury from wind (which is very strong at times near the gorge in Troutdale and Gresham areas).  It also prevents damage against heavy ice and snow.  We know there is a lot of this in Sandy, Or.  Removing branches that touch each other will prevent wound development that can provide openings for decay fungi.

Look and Beauty

Pruning to train a tree to a desired form or size is an important goal for pruning and trimming.  Selective trimming is a useful way of achieving your desired “look” without jeopardizing tree health.  Portland Tree Care can help you achieve both balance between your trees health and beauty.

Meet City Codes

As you may or may not know the cities have many codes to keep trees healthy, safe, and far enough out of the way for walkers, cars, and trucks.  So check with your city to find out if your trees are within guidelines or ask us and we can let you know.  Some cities are different but we will check and get back to you.  Check out this link to find out city codes in Portland, Or.

Allow Sun to Enter Property

By pruning certain types of trees and shrubs in a way to allow more sun to enter your property is great for many reasons.  Your grass and smaller shrubs on your property may need more sun to fully thrive.  Grass suffers greatly around large trees due to the lack of sun and the needles that fall on the lawn.  By trimming these large trees and getting all the lower level branches off can help with both of these problems.  We at Portland Tree Care can trim these branches to whatever height you wish.  We can climb your tree if needed to get branches above 25 feet.

Safer Environment

Pruning is sometimes needed to provide a safe environment in the landscape for people, your property, vehicles, and animals.  Damage to property and serious injury to people can be prevented by removing broken, weak, and/or dead branches.  Improved light penetration or air flow can make the tree stronger by reducing the density of foliage in the tree canopy.  Lower branches can often interfere with power lines and even your satellite reception.

When to Prune

Certain times of the year are better for pruning than others.  Most trees can be successfully pruned in late winter or early spring.  Rapid callus development occurs during this time of year and enables fast closure of wounds.  Insects and disease pathogens are at low levels and will not interfere with the tree’s defenses.  Also, absence of the leaves and foliage makes it easy to view the structure of the tree, enabling the removal of appropriate branches.  Trees such as maple, walnut, and birch will “bleed” in the early spring when a cut is made.  Although ugly, sap flowing from a cut branch is part of the tree’s defense system and causes minimal injury to the tree.  Pruning in early summer will help avoid this flow.

Pruning may need to be done at other times of the year to correct damage resulting from storms.  Although early spring is the ideal time for pruning, injury usually will not occur at other times, with one exception.  We try to avoid heavy pruning during or just after the period of active growth in mid to late spring.  Removing leaves when the food reserves of the tree are low can weaken the tree and may stimulate additional growth.  Pruning during the growing season usually is limited to removing suckers from the base of the tree and water sprouts inside the tree crown.  Sucker and water sprout growth provides little value to the tree and should be removed.
